The Stillness That Carries Us Through a Crisis

There are moments in life that arrive without warning. One second everything feels ordinary, and the next, the cup slips from your hands and shatters into a thousand pieces.

That happened to me recently.

When the cup fell and broke into a thousand pieces, I had to clean up the mess quietly. There was something profoundly symbolic about that simple act. Piece by piece, I gathered what could no longer be made whole. There was no drama, no rush to assign blame, no frantic search for answers. Just the quiet rhythm of being present with what was.

Then I paused.

Instead of becoming consumed by the disruption, I watched the scene like an observer. I took a few deep breaths and allowed myself to enter that inner place of stillness—the space that always exists beneath the noise of fear, disappointment, and uncertainty.

Over the years, I’ve come to understand that every crisis offers us two choices. We can react from the frightened part of ourselves, or we can respond from the wisest part of who we are.

As someone who has spent a lifetime observing the subtle patterns of life, I have learned that clarity rarely comes from forcing solutions. It comes from creating enough inner silence to hear what life is trying to reveal.

When everything around us feels fragmented, our first instinct is often to try to put the pieces back together exactly as they were. Yet life has a different invitation. Sometimes what breaks apart was never meant to return to its previous form. Sometimes the breaking is what creates space for something truer to emerge.

This is where surrender becomes a quiet act of courage.

By surrender, I don’t mean giving up. I mean releasing our grip on the illusion that we must control every outcome. It is choosing trust over resistance. It is allowing life to unfold while remaining anchored in our deepest values.

I often remind myself to summon my highest self—the divine presence that already lives within me. The part of me untouched by fear, untouched by circumstance, untouched by the opinions of the world.

That is the self I choose to listen to.

That is the self that knows.

When we pray, this is what we are really doing. Prayer is more than asking for help. It is a conscious return to our highest awareness. It is a sacred conversation between the human self-navigating uncertainty and the divine self that has never forgotten the way home.

In that quiet communion, something shifts.

Our breathing slows.

Our thoughts soften.

Our hearts begin to trust again.

The external situation may not change immediately, but our relationship to it changes completely.

Every crisis asks us one question:

Who will you become in this moment?

Not what will happen next.
Not how quickly you can fix it.
Not why did this happen.

But who are you choosing to be while it unfolds?

The shattered cup became my teacher. It reminded me that life is fragile, that control is temporary, and that peace is never found in perfect circumstances. Peace is cultivated within us, one conscious breath at a time.

If you find yourself standing in the middle of your own broken pieces today, don’t rush.

Breathe.

Observe.

Clean up what needs cleaning with gentleness.

Then become still enough to hear the quiet wisdom waiting beneath the chaos.
